Company History
The business first started in 1914 under the name of Wood, Robinson & Collins, trading from premises off Trafford Road, Salford. The original partnership lasted only a few months before being dissolved and George Ernest Robinson formed a new business in the name of
G E Robinson & Company with himself as the sole proprietor.

In 1918 the business moved to its present site where expansion began to take place and a new Sawmill and Office Block were erected. On 4th April 1935 the business was incorporated as a Limited Liability Company. Mr Robinson became Chairman and
Frank L Hill Managing Director.

On Mr Robinson’s death in 1944 Mr Hill became Chairman,a position he held until his death in 1961. Mr Hill was succeeded as Chairman by Norman D Ineson and, when Mr Ineson retired in 1977, by Jim McCarthy. On 6th February 1985 the Managing Director, Harry Alcock, died suddenly. The company faced an uncertain future until in May 1985 
Mr McCarthy recruited Dennis Hubbard, Bob Telfer and David Catterall to the business. In 1987 Mal Cunningham succeeded Jim McCarthy as Chairman, continuing in the role until January 1995.

On 6th January 1995 the company was purchased by G E Robinson Group Ltd in a Management Buy Out by Bob Telfer and David Catterall.

On 1st January 2001 G E Robinson & Co Ltd took over the business of HLH TIMBER & PLYWOOD LTD based in Trafford Park, and brought it onto the Montford Street site.

On 1st May 2002 GER acquired the business of

GARSTANG TIMBER & BUILDING SUPPLIES

G E Robinson Group was sold on  2 October 2006 to Northern Irish company
